woyww- consumed by a kitchen

All art and craft fallen by the wayside as I am consumed by a kitchen renovation.  After months of discussion, consultation, redesign and plans I was all ready to start.  As I marvelled at how a designer could fit so much into my small kitchen it suddenly dawned on me he had measured it incorrectly.  Armed with my scrapbook ruler I measured it out and finally all agreed it was wrong.  New corrected design and family grateful I have great visual spatial abilities.  I may not be able to add numbers but I have "superior" abilities at working out how things fit together.  I can also pack a car boot and have room to spare!! Hopefully my desk will be back to normal next week.

  1. Thanks for your comment. I designed our kitchen layout and DH built it! Took some persuasion to get him to move the plumbing and lower the internal window to the surface level so the worktop could go through it. But in the end he did it.Brilliant eye for you to notice the measuring error well done. BJ#35

  3. Well done on spotting that, it would have been a nightmare once they'd started and probably cost a fortune, you know with contractors that it's never their fault!!
I'll know where to come if we want to re do the kitchen/bathroom. My problem is that in my head it's always much bigger than it actually is!!
    Good Luck with it all.

  4. Lucky you found the error before they made it. I've been wanting to update my kitchen for ages but every time I get the money, something else breaks and I have to spend the money somewhere else. I hope your new kitchen is fabulous and perfect for what you need.
    Have a great week.

  6. Of course you can work out how things fit, and pack a car boot - you're a woman and therefore naturally talented in so multiple ways. Think your kitchen designer must have been watching too many Dr Who progs and trying for a Tardis effect - would be good if it could be done.
    Thanks for dropping by earlier.

  7. My beloved Hubby always quotes the old maxim- 'Measure Twice, cut once!'. Good job your eye is better than the contractors.I'm like Lisa- I always believe I can get twice as much into a space as is actually possible!Have a great week, Hugs, Shaz #90

  8. Well, I am good at boot packing but don't share your spatial awareness, at least I don't think. How thanksful you must be to have that gift. Good luck with the renovations.

  9. Well done you on spotting the error - saved time and money there! I share your spatial awareness ability, car packing? Piece of cake... Parallel parking..a doddle. We should form a club! Women who can do these things just as good as the blokes!!

  10. At least you found the mistake now and now when they were trying to fit all of the cabnets on the wall! Happy WOYWW - Helen T #65

  11. I'm sat reading my WOYWW blogs on my sick bed this week but have my mask on so you don't catch anything. I'm enjoying reading what everyone is up to this week [it's better than reading magazines :-) ]. I'm leaving a copied comment so you know I've called by because my hands are too weak and shaky to keep typing out my comments this week.
    Big hugs,

  12. Have fun with the remodel! It will be heck while it is going on, but heaven when complete. It is always fun to pick out all the fixtures and new excessories.

  16. Good job finding that error. When you work in an area everyday, you DO know what will work and what will not. I have drawn my own floor plan for a house I hope to get to build next year, simply because I can't find a male architect that can put in a great kitchen! LOL Good luck on the renovation, do post us some pictures along the way!

  17. You would get on well with my DH. He can twice as much into our small fridge than anyone would consider even vaguely possible. What a good thing you can sort out spaces, that could have been expensive. Thank you for calling in today. It is now getting dark here and all I want to do is to curl up in front of the fire. Have a good week. xx Maggie #44

  18. Great catch on finding the measurement glitch. I didn't when they measured mine. Luckily the one cabinet only over hangs a door way 1/2" and the other counter top about an inch into the door way but we just took down the doors and made them open walk ways. The big challenge that the builder had to pay for was the miss measure on where the sink and stove cuts were made in a $4,000 counter top. Glad I didn't have to eat that! Good luck with the renovation and I am glad it is you and not me! Thanks for sharing, commenting by my blog, and have a great week! Vickie #38

  19. Talk about a quart into a pint pot! That would have been a costly and time consuming error if it wasn't picked up. A couple of before and after photos would be good, you know how nosy we all are!

  20. Well spotted, that could have been disastrous!
I did engineering drawing many years ago so I got the job of doing the plans for our kitchen revamp. What I didn't tell hubby was after I'd measured 3 times to ensure accuracy, I then planned cupboards along the whole wall with only 3mm to spare!! Don't know what he was complaining about - I knew I was accurate and I had every faith he'd put them up so that they'd all fit in properly....which they did!
Looking forward to seeing some pics of the finished project!
    Have a good week

  21. Good on ya, just what you didn't need only half a kitchen fitting into the space.I planned and measured my own - don't trust anyone else. If you visit me you will see I have some planning to do lol.

    Happy WOYWW.

  22. Well done you - was your kitchen designer a man??? A few years back when we redesigned our kitchen I had several people come and measure up - one was so rude we called and told him not to bother with plans and another like yours was fitting so much into our tiny space I knew it wouldn't work - he had full depth cabinets on both walls which would have meant that the dishwasher door wouldn't lower completely to be able to load it - I spent time in MFI measuring the drop of dishwasher doors and then putting tape on the kitchen floor to convince OH that I was right - designers comment was "well you don't have to drop the door completely do you" !!!
In the end we went with a female designer who was the only one who commented that our existing kitchen had a run of full depth cupboards and another of a smaller depth as soon as she walked in the door. As you say its down to spacial awareness.

  23. Wow, aren't you clever, Sandra. I am sure your new kitchen will be awesome!

Thanks for your lovely comment, and it's good to be back again. My hubby is a real star at finding things he knows I will like, and I am having such fun putting art into that little book. Keep an eye on my blog for future additions!

  25. Whew! You also are blessed with a strong Intuition whispering in your ear to begin with! I'm so happy for you that you got it straightened out before the process began. I've been through a remodel and it's "trying," but, oh, so worth the fuss and bother! I hope yours goes smoothly! Darnell #63

  26. Oh no! Sounds like me and my living room! I was told it was 20' x 23' and planning a change according.... nope! That size includes the dining area, which is adjacent but not part of the living room (and of course I had planned that as a separate area with separate stuff) so it pays to measure twice by different people! Holy cow though, so good you caught that before it started. What a mess that would have been.

  28. Hope your new kitchen is well on the way to completion and that you will be able to get back to your workdesk soon. I've just been admiring your beautiful layouts - I notice that they are all black & white photographs but you have teamed them up with lovely pastel shades which compliment them perfectly. I'd love to have been at the workshop - it sounds like fun. Elizabeth - later than ever this week - x #75
