woyww - canvas and stall stuff

Still working on things to sell at the school fete.  On the left a gesso canvas with a Graphic 45 image that I will glue on and add metal bits.  On the right is a book/journal that I have made, using gessoed canvas for the cover then binding in folds of mixed papers, tags etc.  Quite happy how it has come together.  A pic of the cover....
which has been coloured with paint and lots of glimmer mist sprays.
A busy week as I also did a workshop with Donna Downey and came home with two completed projects.  Still have to add a strip of black and white photos to the top canvas.  A fun bright canvas using gelatos, inks, tags, washi tape and pan pastels.   The final project was the pan pastel canvas.
Happy how this finally turned out and I like the effect.  But not quite sold on the pan pastels themselves.  I am very heavy handed so I ruined sponges, got pastels everywhere and at one point was ready to throw the insipid canvas out the window. Donna kept me persevering with my technique building layers of colour and the canvas and I came home together and the pan pastels stayed in the shop!
I am interested to hear what others think of pan pastels as I haven't bought any as our relationship is still not cordial....
Off to visit the woyww desks courtesy of the lovely Julia.

  9. Lucky you to do a class with Donna. I love her work and I love what you did with her. Good on you for hanging in there. I have 4 Pan colours and they are rarely used. They have their place in the art world more so than the crafting world, but I find I use my Tim stash more. I will try use them on a canvas like this and see how I like it...will come back to you...

  12. Wow! These projects are stunning! I love the one you did with the pastels! I've never used these. What I do love and don't use often enough lately are Portfolio Pastels. I find the colours really vivid and melting them with a heat gun when you're blending is such fun! Thanks so much for the earlier visit! Julie Ann xx #42

  15. Hi Sandra,
That's all looking great! Specially love the canvasses (both of them). Will look forward to seeing them in real life. I think I quite like the pan pastels but I haven't used them enough yet to "rave" about them :)

  18. For, I love the turquoise colour of the book cover...gorgeous! Shows how sad I am, I read the music to see if I could work out what piece it is, lol!!
And I could never get the hang of pastels either when I did my Art A level, a five year old could have done better than me :-)

  19. I've had a catch up of you other posts that I've missed, beautiful things being made, love the boxes and the journal in this post is fantastic. Glad the canvas could be rescued, I like how it turned out, never tried pan pastels so I can't give you any advice! I'd love to see a painting of the sunset through the grasses, let me know if you'd like me to email you the original photo.

  21. First, thank you for your sweet comment on my art journal!! Your work is awesome!! I love the journal and the canvas!! I actually love Pan Pastels. But, like you said, you can't be heavy handed with them. You have to swipe ever so gently!! Then, you won't get dust and the little bit you got goes a long way. I go to the store where everything is a dollar here and get a bag of make up sponges. You get like 20 of them and if you want to (i wouldn't LOL) you can clean them in your sink.
    Hope this helps!!

  22. Oh I just want to touch the cover and the page with the heart on it is so pretty. I can't believe it's canvas. It looks great.

    Thanks for the visit.

  27. The cover to your book/journal is just ***gorgeous***! I haven't used pan pastels, so don't have an informed opinion. There are so many ways to add color to projects that if you don't have an affinity for them, maybe they are not a "must have" for you. Thanks for visiting my blog already. :) Happy WOYWW! ~ Laura #13

  33. Usually when I treat myself to something new, I eventually get around to some sort of review on the old blog.
y Pan Pastels experience was about the me as yours and the relationship hasn't improved..despite a lesson and some encouragement, I didn't think they were for me at al. And have never tried them again!!! I didn't review them on that basis ...couldn't bring any unbalanced starting opinion to the post! having said that, I love the canvas you mAe, well done! I love also the piece that's destined to have photos on it..really love that.

  36. I love your canvas! I do enjoy my PP's as they give such great coverage but I have not used them to give super results like you had.
Did a workshop at CHA with DD - she is a hoot isn't she?
Hugs, Neet 113 (and thanks for the visit you made to me. I am so late!)

  37. Hi Sandra, I love your canvas ... especially the background, it looks marbled. I haven't used PPs so can't pass any comment on them except to say that in any demos I've seen it did look as though it would be only too easy to pick up too much on an applicator. However, I've never seen anyone get the effect you've achieved here - it's fantastic, so perhaps you should reconsider :) Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Elizabeth x #55

  38. Super projects - love the journal. As for pan pastels no idea what they are! Perhaps I ought to ask craft club about them as they seem to be introducing me to new products all the time - but there again maybe NOT! Thanks for the visit, sorry for the late reply BJ#94
