woyww - little gem magnolia on my desk

An early morning shot of my desk as I get ready to sketch a "Magnolia Grandiflora" aka Magnolia little gem or Southern Magnolia depending on which country you live in.  I think they are pretty much the same plant and always fun to paint.
First attempt using far too bright colours to get a feel for the shape and shadows. Choice of yellow was completely wrong but still fun to paint.
Second attempt in a more traditional watercolour style.  Pleased with the end result and now considering doing a third attempt.

Hope everyone is having a fun woyww.  I will get around to visit desks but these days it is a late post and a slow meander over the week.

  4. Hi Sandra, well the second one captured the authentic colouring of the magnolia, but, contrarily, I actually prefer the first one :)
No time for Woyww this week. Catch up soon, hopefully :)

  7. Love the second magnolia, white flowers are difficult to paint, you have captured the way white reflects surrounding colours without losing the fact it's white. Great job

  8. Hi Lovely Magnolia, I do love them. The only problem over here, is that because we get a lot of rain, the petals make the most lethal mess on pavements when they drop!Have a great week, Hugs, Shaz #5 xxx

  10. Love the second magnolia (the first one doesn't look like a magnolia because of the color). Beautiful.
    Have a good week,

  11. Lovely work Sandra. The first one is fun and could be a fantasy flower whereas the second one is realistic but both have a place in your studio. Love to see your painting.

  12. Gorgeous Sandra! Love them both. We have one of the dark red ones in the garden but it hasn't done so well. I think the white ones seem to do better.
Thanks for the visit and happy woyww, Angela x 28

  14. I love them both...the colour makes it a different character rather than a wrong flower...art...s'all about interpretation isn't it! Lovely stuff, hope you're enjoying them...a third will qualify as a series!

  16. Wow, beautiful paintings - they are both fabulous, what a huge influence colour has on how a piece turns out - such a different feel to each one. I love the paler one against that beautiful blue, absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for stopping by my desk earlier, I hope you have a great week,

  18. Hi Sandra! Thanks for visiting my blog earlier. Love your flower paintings, especially the subtle colours against the dark blue background in the second one. It looks so beautiful! Even my son (10 years old) complemented on it when he saw it. Then he quickly added "it's a bit girly though". But that's the good thing about being female - we can be a girly as we want! All the best for the rest of the week! zsuzsa xx
