woyww - a bit of this and that

My obsession with making my own w/c paints continues.  There is something quite soothing as you move the glass muller over the pigment and binder in a continuous motion.  This is a mix of a grey rock I had pulverised and some cerulean blue pigment.

Second colour is a pulverised rock picked up by a friend in Tumut, NSW.  Yes, I have friends and family now looking around and picking up interesting rocks.

A chart I made with the home made w/c and the original rocks.
Hopefully, this gives an indication of the colours when painted.

Photo of our Star Gem Magnolia with a bonus bee.  I should get around to painting this in the next few weeks.

No beach photo today as our beaches are officially closed.  You may have seen photos of the hordes descending on our popular beaches over a sunny few days.  Words fail me.

Makes me happy to be an introvert who seeks out quieter places.

Stay safe and stay home crafting dear woyww.

  1. Without reading I pondered over the first picture and wondered what on earth the implement was. To me it was a huge ball, coloured blue with a glass handle type thing sticking out of it. Then appeared another one but a different colour and it didn't seem quite as much an object. Oops, silly me it was paint and your glass muller. Wow, love what you are doing, the effects are ksuper.
Gorgeous flower, I look forward to seeing it in paint.
Yes, people were silly last weekend here too - now we all have to stay in, but they still do not learn. Thankfully they have now given the police authority to fine!
    Stay safe and well

  2. Loving your home made paints! I cannot believe how stupid some people are, told to stay home and flock to popular places... and summer is coming and it's going to get worse... lets hope they learn their lessons. anyhow, enough of that! I look forward to seeing your magnolia soon! Helen #5

  4. Glad you are keeping safe Sandra. Words fail me about the covidiots who cannot understand the requirement for social distancing. At least you will have plenty of paint supplies. Stay safe and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #10

  6. Morning Sandra. You make your own watercolours??? Oh my word - how amazing! I agree; you definitely should paint that glorious magnolia (?) I love the way the pollen has fallen onto the lower petals - that's my sort of photo!
Take care of yourself. Stay safe. God bless.

  10. I was flummoxed by the first photo at first, just couldn't work out what I was looking at but all came clear when I read the text underneath! How fantastic that you're enjoying making the paints so much and that others are now searching out other sources for you. Enjoy painting that beautiful flower, it's gorgeous!

  11. Yes like the others i wondered what on earth that was- how clever! Are they watercolour or do you mix something with them to make them acrylic? Take care - keep safe Soojay #21

  12. I didn't know you could create your own paints like this, Sandra, just fascinating. I shall have to explore the garden. It makes you appreciate the nature in our gardens so much now that our lifes have become so much smaller doesn't it. I walk round my little patch everyday to see what's flowering. Stay safe and well.

  13. Hi Sandra, this brought back memories of when I used to make my own natural dies though it was a bit more messy than making the paint I think and a bit more smelly too! The flower is beautiful and yes I did see the beaches, some people are crazy. If you would like to see the progress with the Log cabin you can find it here: https://angelacuttingandcarving.blogspot.com/p/angelas-log-cabin.html
Sending you best wishes for a happy and creative woyww, Angela x3x

  14. Hi Sandra, beautiful flower, although I did have to squint to see the bee :) I think making your own paint is a craft in itself. I could get on to Julia's today so here is my link: https://craftingwithjack.blogspot.com/2020/03/woyww-564-and-getting-slammed.html

  15. Your paint making is fascinating and I love how you are getting such beautiful colours from just bits of rock - incredible. We have had a similar situation with the New Forest as you have with your beaches - in these strange times we really are seeing both the best and worst of people!
    Stay safe and well,

  16. This is such a cool post. I know nothing about making my own paint. But I love that you use rocks. It looks so cool and I love the colors you have made. Please share more. I love learning something new. As for the beach goers. I saw on the news that college kids were going to the beaches in Miami. I don't get it. Did they think they were immune? Your Magnolia looks beautiful. Do share when you paint them.
    Stay well, my friend.

  18. What fun, making your own paint, wonderful idea, but I don't paint! That magnolia is gorgeous, I love them, but our garden isn't very suitable for one.
    Enjoy

  20. My goodness, that has to be a first for WOYWW, Sandra! Such amazing creativity and imagination, and what stunningly beautiful results. I love the subtle, natural colours you've achieved. The little glass tool for grinding the pigments is a beautiful object in its own right.

Vermeer would be proud of you! This is such an intriguing project.

Keep safe and well, and happy WOYWW,

  21. I'm very much looking forward to seeing your painting of the magnolia, hope you include that busy bee..! I feel so relaxed just looking at you pounding and mulling your own watercolour pigments, I remember my art teacher doing something similar many many moons ago after being questioned about his glass paper weight. It's a great for of exercise hee hee!! Take care, stay safe & Happy WoywW Tracey #19

  22. Beautiful photography - such an 'arty' post today! Making your own paints sounds like hard work but good for you! Beautiful magnolia - does it smell like a grandiflora? Always reminds me of gin and tonics - lemony! Happy WOYWW (I'm late I know) keep well, keep safe, Cindy #23

  23. Hi Sandra.

You are assembling quite an array of really beautiful, subtle pigments there. I love that you have friends and family picking up likely specimens too! I wonder, would shell/mother of pearl give an irridescence to the pigment or would it just turn to dust?
Look forward to seeing the Star Gem Magnolia painting.
    Stay well!

  24. I completely get it. A smooth repetitive motion and a really incredibly useful and gorgeous result at the end...win win win! I love that even your friends and family are looking out for interesting rocks...don’t they make some marvellous colours. Can’t get more natural than that. Blown away by that magnolia, how absolutely perfectly gorgeous, no wonder you feel the need to immortalise it. Stay well xx

  25. Thanks for your visit. What a pretty flower, we have no green grass or flowers yet, MONDAY forecast 60's and SUN. I am ready for that. Interesting paint techniques. More things ordered closed, so about only take out food and grocery stores open here. 60 Miles away a few box stores, Walmart/Target as long as they sell food. But we are content here and need nothing ! I am always happy to be home, just need to DECLUTTER. Keep safe and Blessing to you and yours.

  26. Thanks for visiting, Sandra, and I'm glad you like my digital Celtic knots. I quite like the purple and gold one too! I had to laugh at the idea of social distancing on Zoom! Of course, nobody likes looking up someone's nose, especially if they are likely to sneeze all over you!! I am always prepared with lots of activities at home because I'm more or less housebound anyway - so this lockdown isn't much hardship for me. My only problem is securing a slot for online grocery deliveries, but my hubby goes out and gets stuff if we need it. So far we are doing OK.

  27. Sorry I am so late in getting back to you ... like a lot of people I am struggling to cope with all the changes and all my good intentions go clean out the window! Your paints are simply amazing - never seen anything like it and am fascinated. Take lots of care, love Debbie xXx
