woyww - colour mixing charts

Not often I get to post photos of my latest obsession.  Haha

Currently exploring all the colour palettes I have tucked away in my desk.  Then I thought I should document a swatch of each colour in a sketchbook.

That led me to doing a bit of reading on colour theory.

So I started mixing using a colour wheel.  But I didn't find it really helped me learn to mix colours.

Moved on to the grid colour chart.  Quickly overwhelmed with so many colours.

Tried a smaller colour grid with a limited palette.
Getting a bit better.

By this time I have watched numerous Youtube clips and purchased a book on Colour Theory.

Then I found the colour mixing tutorial by Alek Krylow and this works for me.
Far more ordered and makes sense.

It allows me to mix eg.  blues and yellows,  resulting in a vast range of green values.

I plan to do this with all my colours.
Could take me until the end of the year.

Finished the oriental Lily.
Kept a light touch and achieved some form in the leaves and bulbs.

I plan to visit lots of desks over the next few days.
stay safe and have a creative week.

  1. Your colour swatches look like fun, I do love colour mixing and that grid chart that you found overwhelming is a work of art in it's own right! Your Lily is just jaw-droppingly beautiful, I am always amazed at how you make your paintings look almost photographic - such skill and it's always such a delight to visit and see you wonderful creations.
    Hope you have great week,

  3. I could live with those colour swatches on the wall, I do love me a good palette like that. But I’ll never do it myself, no patience you see!! (I know myself well now....) Look at those lilies, I can smell the heady fragrance from here, you are clever!

  5. Oh wow, that really IS attention to detail! I love all the swatches and variety of colours. It amazes me how many shades you can get out of the same pan with watercolours. Your lily is absolutely stunning. Stay safe and keep smiling, Lisa-Jane #5

  8. Achieved SOME form? I could pick em off the page they’re so real. I know they are crazy and don’t help, but my word, this grid colour palette is a gift to look at for me! I can totally see the organisation in the last swatch and how that will work for each colour. A lot of work but a lot of learning in doing this, and the finished folio will be a work of art in itself.

  9. Your painting is fabulous! Mixing colours has been my downfall I must admit. It wasn’t covered at all in my 2 year art course, but that was years ago. The colour wheel is useless because you have to know which colour of blue and which colour of yellow make a certain colour of green. I shall watch that tutorial with interest. Have a great week Angela #16

  10. Stunning Lily Sandra. Those colour palette play pages would make great backgrounds to cards. Glad you've found a system that works for you. Stay safe and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #3

  11. Your lily painting is so amazing, Sandra, that I can almost smell its scent, and your colour swatches are all little works of art in themselves. What a feast of colour. It certainly is a labour to do all that - years ago I attempted something similar colour-mixing dyes for wool.

Thank you for your visit, which I am so glad you enjoyed! I'm glad the ginger bestiary amused you too.

    Happy belated WOYWW,

  12. HI Sandra, I can relate to the obsession thing - but it's time well spent isn't it, all useful knowledge and practice. I have a colour wheel which I don't use as much as I thought I would, also one of those greyscale tonal value finder things. Looking at all those beautiful colours you've mixed, I'm wondering if I should try the same, I know I need a lot of practice at mixing colours and trying out some of the supplies I don't use so often .... hmmm .... I think your obsession could be catching .... :o) Have a great BH weekend. Annie C #21
