woyww - foraging along the coast line

A walk along the coastline after a storm can reveal some lovely remains from the sea.  Sea urchins can be a pest and quite nasty if you tread on them when they have quills.

But, once they are washed up on the beach there is a bright side.  The quills can be crushed
to produce a pink or purple pigment.

So I couldn't wait to crush the quills and mull the pigment  powder with binder.
The result was a dusty pink.

Then of course I had to paint a sea urchin.   I also added small amounts
of a normal violet watercolour to give the image some depth.

Quite pleased with how this little painting turned out.

Now of course I am searching the internet to see if I can find different quills
in the hope of adding purple to my handmade watercolour palette.

Hope your week has been safe, interesting and most of all creative.

  11. Wow Sandra, absolutely amazing - the painting is beautiful and the fact you made the paint from the spines just adds to the magic of it. I have some of the spines in a large jar and I shall look at them with renewed respect for being able to produce that beautiful colour.
Hope you have a lovely week

  14. Oh Sandra, that is gorgeous. How wonderful that you actually used the sea urchin pigment to paint a sea urchin! I love the little painting, and you should be more than "quite pleased" with it, in my opinion! You are soooo talented...

Thank you for your lovely visit and for your comment about the gold - we think we struck gold when we got these 2 kitties! They were definitely meant for us. I looked at literally hundreds of different kittens on the Internet and as soon as I saw their picture I fell in love and knew they were ours. When the lady told us they'd been born on 24th May it just confirmed it, and she was so delighted when we told her it was our wedding anniversary! They have given us more joy and fun than we can describe. As for my pea microgreens, I am not sure how well this method of growing would do if you wanted them to grow to maturity. As far as I let them go, they are still living off the nutrients in the pea seed, and water and sunlight, but later they would require the nutrients from the soil as well. I don't know anything about snow peas - are they white? They sound very interesting! My second batch of peas will be ready to go on the kitchen windowsill tomorrow as they are up to the covers now. Amazing how quickly they grow.

  16. Well who new Sandra, am so happy to be learning from you! That lovely sea urchin pink is a pretty good match for one of my roses, which is a beauty, we refer to it as vintage pink. I wonder how many odd looks ill get if I start to refer to it as the Sea Urchin rose!
